Telephone and telephone lines constitute the basis of everyday communications. Some recent technological developments have directly and indirectly influenced this means of communication. Below is an overview of different types of phone lines and networks which are used to deliver telephone service.
Telecommunication Company of Iran utilizes different networks to deliver telephone service:
• Twisted-pair copper wire [copper network]
• Fiber optic cable to copper cable
• Fiber optic to fiber optic

Telephone service (i.e. landline service) is traditionally delivered through a pair of copper wires – E1 data can also be carried over the copper lines. But, the latter two are the latest methods for transmission of analog and digital (E1) signals or voice over Internet Protocol (IP) networks – by using fiber optic network.
If the incoming signal transmitted from Telecommunication Company is an optical signal and the subscriber’s network is copper cable, ONU is used in the subscriber’s location in order to convert optical signals transmitted via fiber to electrical signals. But if the incoming signal transmitted from Telecommunication Company is fiber optic and the subscriber’s network is also fiber optic, the incoming optical signal should directly enter into the central core switch.

Advantages and disadvantages of analog and digital telephone lines:
Advantages: They are easily available and easy to use. The equipment is available in large quantities.
Disadvantages: They are primitive. In comparison with the latest technologies (e.g. fiber optic infrastructure), it has lower bandwidth and hence the quality will be much lower.
It should be also noted that SIP Trunk is the latest technology to deliver landline telephone services. This technology is now being used all over the world, including Iran.

Advantages of telephone lines:
• SIP Trunk is considerably less expensive than traditional telephone service.
• High level of security/safety
• Separate physical wires are not required – since a SIP Trunk is a virtual phone line provided by an Internet Telephony Service Provider.
• SIP offers High Definition voice; because SIP trunk, compared to twisted-pair copper wires, provides higher bandwidth.
• Invulnerability (because of magnetic field and noise)
• SIP trunks can be delivered over an MPLS, intranet and internet.
